Get ready for a spine-tingling October! As Halloween approaches in 2023, there’s no better way to celebrate the season of scares than by diving into a curated list of horror movies that will send shivers down your spine. But not just any horror movies – we’ve put together a chilling selection of films currently available for free on Amazon Prime, and even one that you can watch on Freevee with a few commercials thrown in.

Now, before we get into the eerie details, let’s establish the ground rules. If you’re like me and prefer your horror without the gruesome torture scenes found in movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” then you’re in the right place. We’ll be steering clear of those.

Speaking of preferences, I have a soft spot for classics like “Event Horizon” (1997), “Halloween” (1978), “Trick ‘r Treat” (2007), and the timeless “Night of the Living Dead” (1990). If these films send chills down your spine too, you’re in for a treat because our list is filled with movies that capture that same spine-tingling essence.

Now, here’s a little surprise I stumbled upon while preparing this list – it seems the “found footage” genre has quite the presence this year. Don’t let that discourage you, though, because the entries on this list are handpicked as great horror movies, even in an oversaturated subgenre. And for those of you who, like me, weren’t thrilled by “Cloverfield” (2008) or “The Blair Witch Project” (1999), fear not – those two won’t make an appearance here.

But wait, there’s more! If you’re still hungry for horror after devouring this list, don’t forget to check out my “Watch List” on Amazon Prime for additional chilling suggestions.

The Horror Movies are released from the humorous, starting October 1st, to the scariest, being released on October 31st.

The Return of The Living Dead (1985)

“The Return of the Living Dead” (1985), directed by Dan O’Bannon, is a wildly irreverent and over-the-top take on the zombie genre. This film offers a unique blend of horror and comedy that leans heavily on campy humor and outrageous scenarios, making it a memorable addition to the zombie subgenre.

The film takes place in a medical supply warehouse, where a group of bumbling employees accidentally unleashes a toxic gas that reanimates the dead. As the reanimated corpses hunger for human brains, chaos ensues, and a group of misfits must fend off the undead in a desperate battle for survival.

One of the film’s notable strengths is its willingness to embrace its absurdity. From the outset, it establishes a tone of campy horror-comedy that is both endearing and hilarious. The zombies themselves are depicted as rotting, half-decomposed corpses with an insatiable craving for brains, and their grotesque appearances add to the film’s over-the-top charm.

The cast of eccentric characters, including Freddy (Thom Mathews) and Frank (James Karen), inject humor and personality into the story. Linnea Quigley’s portrayal of the punk rocker Trash is particularly memorable, thanks in part to her outrageous dance sequence.

“The Return of the Living Dead” doesn’t shy away from gore and practical effects, and it revels in showcasing grotesque and often comical scenes of zombie mayhem. The practical effects, created by a team led by William Munns, are impressive given the film’s budget constraints and contribute to the film’s nostalgic appeal.

While the film is undoubtedly entertaining, it may not be for everyone. Its relentless focus on humor and absurdity can be overwhelming, making it less effective as a traditional horror film. Some viewers may find the humor hit-or-miss, and the characters’ decisions and actions can be frustratingly irrational, even within the context of a campy horror-comedy.

In conclusion, “The Return of the Living Dead” (1985) is a cult classic that offers a unique and offbeat take on the zombie genre. Its campy humor, over-the-top practical effects, and memorable characters have earned it a dedicated fan base. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it remains a fun and nostalgic experience for those who appreciate horror with a healthy dose of camp and comedy. If you’re in the mood for a zombie romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this film is worth a watch for its sheer outrageousness and entertainment value.

3D Print

I had fun with this print and decided to print a Resurrection Cemetery Lithophane that can be illuminated by a candle. The Lithophane took just under 6 hours to print and turned out great, except for some noticeable issues with the thickness.

You can find the STL file HERE

I used Hatchbox White Filament which you can find HERE

Suggestions:

Lithophanes can be difficult to print and you need to tune your printer for them then make a profile. HERE is my earlier post about how to do this.
