Get ready for a spine-tingling October! As Halloween approaches in 2023, there’s no better way to celebrate the season of scares than by diving into a curated list of horror movies that will send shivers down your spine. But not just any horror movies – we’ve put together a chilling selection of films currently available for free on Amazon Prime, and even one that you can watch on Freevee with a few commercials thrown in.

Now, before we get into the eerie details, let’s establish the ground rules. If you’re like me and prefer your horror without the gruesome torture scenes found in movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” then you’re in the right place. We’ll be steering clear of those.

Speaking of preferences, I have a soft spot for classics like “Event Horizon” (1997), “Halloween” (1978), “Trick ‘r Treat” (2007), and the timeless “Night of the Living Dead” (1990). If these films send chills down your spine too, you’re in for a treat because our list is filled with movies that capture that same spine-tingling essence.

Now, here’s a little surprise I stumbled upon while preparing this list – it seems the “found footage” genre has quite the presence this year. Don’t let that discourage you, though, because the entries on this list are handpicked as great horror movies, even in an oversaturated subgenre. And for those of you who, like me, weren’t thrilled by “Cloverfield” (2008) or “The Blair Witch Project” (1999), fear not – those two won’t make an appearance here.

But wait, there’s more! If you’re still hungry for horror after devouring this list, don’t forget to check out my “Watch List” on Amazon Prime for additional chilling suggestions.

The Collector (2009)

“The Collector” (2009), directed by Marcus Dunstan, is a relentless and nerve-wracking horror-thriller that introduces audiences to a sadistic game of survival within a house rigged with deadly traps. With its gritty atmosphere, gruesome creativity, and suspenseful pacing, the film delivers a gruesome and intense ride from start to finish.

The story follows Arkin (Josh Stewart), an ex-convict desperately trying to repay a debt to his ex-wife. In a desperate bid to gather the money he needs, Arkin plots to rob his new employer’s country home, believing it to be an easy heist. However, he soon discovers that he’s not alone. Another criminal, the enigmatic Collector, has targeted the property as well, turning it into a house of horrors with a labyrinth of gruesome traps.

One of the film’s strengths is its unrelenting tension. From the moment Arkin enters the house, the suspense begins to build, and it doesn’t let up until the credits roll. The traps set by the Collector are not only creatively designed but also genuinely terrifying, creating a constant sense of dread as Arkin navigates the deadly maze.

Josh Stewart delivers a solid performance as Arkin, a morally complex character who evolves from a reluctant criminal to an unlikely hero. His resourcefulness and determination in the face of overwhelming odds make him a relatable and sympathetic protagonist.

“The Collector” effectively utilizes its grimy and claustrophobic setting to enhance the atmosphere of dread. The dimly lit corridors and ominous silence contribute to the film’s unnerving ambiance, and the gruesome traps are showcased with a visceral and brutal intensity.

The film’s antagonist, the Collector, remains a mysterious and menacing figure throughout, hidden behind a mask and revealing little about his motives. This adds an element of psychological terror to the proceedings, as viewers are left to wonder about the sadistic mind behind the traps.

However, “The Collector” does not shy away from graphic violence and gore, which may be too intense for some viewers. Additionally, the film’s conclusion is open-ended, leaving room for a sequel but potentially frustrating those seeking a more conclusive resolution.

In conclusion, “The Collector” (2009) is a relentless and brutal horror-thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with its gruesome traps, tense pacing, and relentless suspense. Josh Stewart’s strong performance and the film’s gritty atmosphere make it a memorable and visceral experience for fans of the genre. If you’re in the mood for a dark and twisted cat-and-mouse game with a high body count, “The Collector” is sure to provide a chilling and intense viewing experience.

I was pleasantly surprised by how eerie and fantastic this movie was. However, when it comes to the Safe Box I selected from Thingiverse, there’s an issue with the design. The problem is that the cylinders for the wheels are not hexagonal, which means the wheels can’t properly turn the cylinders. To make it functional, you’d have to use glue to attach the wheels to the cylinders. So, I wouldn’t recommend printing it until someone remakes the design to fix this issue, as the latch won’t be able to secure properly otherwise.
