Get ready for a spine-tingling October! As Halloween approaches in 2023, there’s no better way to celebrate the season of scares than by diving into a curated list of horror movies that will send shivers down your spine. But not just any horror movies – we’ve put together a chilling selection of films currently available for free on Amazon Prime, and even one that you can watch on Freevee with a few commercials thrown in.

Now, before we get into the eerie details, let’s establish the ground rules. If you’re like me and prefer your horror without the gruesome torture scenes found in movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” then you’re in the right place. We’ll be steering clear of those.

Speaking of preferences, I have a soft spot for classics like “Event Horizon” (1997), “Halloween” (1978), “Trick ‘r Treat” (2007), and the timeless “Night of the Living Dead” (1990). If these films send chills down your spine too, you’re in for a treat because our list is filled with movies that capture that same spine-tingling essence.

Now, here’s a little surprise I stumbled upon while preparing this list – it seems the “found footage” genre has quite the presence this year. Don’t let that discourage you, though, because the entries on this list are handpicked as great horror movies, even in an oversaturated subgenre. And for those of you who, like me, weren’t thrilled by “Cloverfield” (2008) or “The Blair Witch Project” (1999), fear not – those two won’t make an appearance here.

But wait, there’s more! If you’re still hungry for horror after devouring this list, don’t forget to check out my “Watch List” on Amazon Prime for additional chilling suggestions.

The Horror Movies are released from the humorous, starting October 1st, to the scariest, being released on October 31st.

Hot Fuzz (2007)

“Hot Fuzz” (2007), directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, is a brilliantly crafted action-comedy that seamlessly combines sharp wit, over-the-top action sequences, and a cleverly twisted plot. It’s a cinematic joyride that pays homage to classic action films while maintaining a distinctive and irreverent British charm.

The film follows Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg), a highly skilled and dedicated London police officer who excels at his job to an almost superhuman degree. His exceptional abilities become a source of envy among his colleagues, leading to his transfer to the seemingly idyllic and crime-free village of Sandford. There, he is paired with Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), an endearingly dimwitted and movie-obsessed constable. As Angel begins to settle into his new role, he soon realizes that Sandford has a dark secret lurking beneath its picturesque facade.

“Hot Fuzz” excels on multiple fronts, starting with its impeccable casting. Simon Pegg’s deadpan delivery and Nick Frost’s lovable incompetence create a dynamic and endearing duo. Their chemistry on screen is infectious, and their evolving partnership provides much of the film’s heart and humor.

Edgar Wright’s direction is a masterclass in visual storytelling and comedic timing. The film is filled with quick cuts, clever visual gags, and callbacks to earlier scenes, creating a comedic rhythm that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. Wright’s affectionate parody of action movie clichés and conventions is both sharp and hilarious.

The film’s ensemble cast, including Timothy Dalton, Jim Broadbent, and Paddy Considine, contributes memorable performances, each character adding to the quirkiness and charm of Sandford.

One of the film’s standout achievements is its ability to seamlessly transition between genres. It starts as a fish-out-of-water comedy, evolves into a murder mystery, and then spectacularly transforms into a high-octane action extravaganza. The action sequences are exhilarating, paying homage to the iconic moments of action cinema while still delivering a unique and comedic twist.

“Hot Fuzz” also boasts a brilliantly crafted screenplay that rewards attentive viewers with layers of humor and references. The film is a treasure trove of subtle jokes, visual gags, and witty dialogue that make repeated viewings a delight.

In conclusion, “Hot Fuzz” is an uproarious and wildly entertaining cinematic experience that stands as a testament to the brilliance of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. It’s a loving homage to action movies that simultaneously serves as a hilarious comedy in its own right. If you’re a fan of clever humor, action-packed sequences, and unforgettable characters, “Hot Fuzz” is an absolute must-see that will leave you laughing and cheering in equal measure.
