Get ready for a spine-tingling October! As Halloween approaches in 2023, there’s no better way to celebrate the season of scares than by diving into a curated list of horror movies that will send shivers down your spine. But not just any horror movies – we’ve put together a chilling selection of films currently available for free on Amazon Prime, and even one that you can watch on Freevee with a few commercials thrown in.

Now, before we get into the eerie details, let’s establish the ground rules. If you’re like me and prefer your horror without the gruesome torture scenes found in movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” then you’re in the right place. We’ll be steering clear of those.

Speaking of preferences, I have a soft spot for classics like “Event Horizon” (1997), “Halloween” (1978), “Trick ‘r Treat” (2007), and the timeless “Night of the Living Dead” (1990). If these films send chills down your spine too, you’re in for a treat because our list is filled with movies that capture that same spine-tingling essence.

Now, here’s a little surprise I stumbled upon while preparing this list – it seems the “found footage” genre has quite the presence this year. Don’t let that discourage you, though, because the entries on this list are handpicked as great horror movies, even in an oversaturated subgenre. And for those of you who, like me, weren’t thrilled by “Cloverfield” (2008) or “The Blair Witch Project” (1999), fear not – those two won’t make an appearance here.

But wait, there’s more! If you’re still hungry for horror after devouring this list, don’t forget to check out my “Watch List” on Amazon Prime for additional chilling suggestions.

The Horror Movies are released from the humorous, starting October 1st, to the scariest, being released on October 31st.

October 31st: Halloween Nightmares
Finally, on the spookiest night of the year, October 31st, we present the grand finale – the scariest of the lot. These movies are not for the faint of heart; they’re designed to make your Halloween truly unforgettable. Prepare for nightmares as we close out our list with a bang.

With this organized approach, you can pick your poison each day, starting with humor and gradually progressing to the ultimate scares as Halloween night approaches. Get ready for a month filled with cinematic thrills and chills!

Candyman (2021)

Jordan Peele’s “Candyman” (2021) is a chilling and thought-provoking addition to the legendary horror franchise that explores the dark and supernatural. With a fresh narrative and powerful commentary, “Candyman” emerges as a standout in the genre.

The film follows Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his partner Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris) as they move into a stylish loft in the gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood. It doesn’t take long for them to become entangled in a disturbing web of urban legends and supernatural terror when Anthony’s artistic curiosity is piqued by the infamous “Candyman” myth. As he delves deeper into the urban legend, he unwittingly resurrects a nightmarish past that not only jeopardizes his sanity but also unleashes a violent and vengeful force.

One of the film’s standout strengths is its ability to blend horror with a complex narrative. “Candyman” delves into themes of urban legends, the power of storytelling, and the consequences of obsession. Peele and director Nia DaCosta use the Candyman legend as a lens to examine the consequences of unchecked curiosity and the blurred lines between fiction and reality.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II delivers a compelling performance as Anthony, a character who undergoes a harrowing transformation as he becomes increasingly obsessed with the Candyman myth. Teyonah Parris also shines as Brianna, providing a grounded and relatable presence amidst the escalating terror. The supporting cast, including Colman Domingo, adds layers to the narrative with their performances.

DaCosta’s direction is visually striking and suspenseful. The film’s use of mirrors, shadows, and reflections creates an eerie atmosphere that keeps viewers on edge throughout. The pacing allows tension to build gradually, and the scares are well-executed, relying on psychological horror rather than cheap jump scares.

However, “Candyman” isn’t without its flaws. Some viewers may find the film’s third act a bit convoluted, as it attempts to tie together the complex threads of the narrative.

“Candyman” (2021) is a thought-provoking and unsettling addition to the horror genre. It successfully updates the classic tale for a modern audience while exploring the consequences of obsession and storytelling. While it may not cater to those seeking straightforward scares, it provides a rich and rewarding experience for those who appreciate horror with substance. Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta’s collaboration delivers a poignant and chilling reminder that the past can have a profound impact on the present.
